Educational Sign Language Interpreters Association of Nigeria (ESLIAN)

We are the ears and mouth of persons with hearing impairment in Nigeria educational institutions, especially to students in educational matters; and for the purpose of promoting the welfare of staff and students with hearing impairment in educational institutions through bridging communication gap between them and the hearing world.

Scope of Operation

The major area of operation of the Association shall be educational. Matters outside this scope shall be considered ancillary and shall be based on convenience.

Aims & Objectives

To promote the welfare of members.
To promote the academic programme of students with hearing impairment.
To cooperate with other stakeholders in the education of students with hearing impairment, to ensure academic success and social integration.
To serve as certifying body for Sign Language Interpreters.

Our Activities

The following activities support our objctives

1.

Organise periodic training, workshops, seminar, and conferences (as the case may be) for the purpose of certification, renewal of certificate and job efficiency.

2.

Liaise with Local, State and Zonal Chapters of the Association in ensuring professional etiquette, code and conduct of sign language interpreting services.

3.

Encourage Local Chapters to establish an office or unit within their Institutions for provision of sign language interpreting services.

4.

Liaise with other stakeholders (Government and NGOs) in the education and welfare of persons with hearing impairments.

MEMBERSHIP

ESLIAN Eligibility for Membership

ESLIAN Eligibility

1. The eligibility for membership shall be subject to:
a. Holding a minimum of NCE or B.Ed in Special Education (both with bias in deaf education).
b. Employment in any educational institution in Nigeria that caters for learners with hearing impairment.
c. Proven interest to become a member of the Association by obtaining application form, and
d. Sign language proficiency.

2. A non-refundable Registration fee for intending members shall be N5000 (subject to review).

3. Members shall pay an annual due of Two thousand naira (N2000) only (subject to review).
